We often fail to notice our silent elderly observers...
In my role as an artist and someone deeply attached to my grandparents, I ponder extensively on the inner worlds of the elderly. How does their inner dialogue unfold? What sensations arise from witnessing life's passage? My focus here lies on elderly people with dementia or Alzheimer's disease. It is almost impossible to know what is really going on internally. They observe life, conversations; they observe their loved ones getting frustrated with them. It feels as if they are indifferent, and at times they seem like their old selves, how we knew them. It can be incredibly saddening to see your grandparents and your parents coming to terms with their parents' decline but there is also a form of surrender that can give strength. It doesn't need to be all grim and depressive. I believe there is a chance to have true moments of joy, of tribute and of gratitude.
